Before leaving office, Grant apologized to the nation.  He said his mistakes were "errors of  judgment  but   not   intent." Almost twenty years later, penniless and battling cancer, the ex-president struggled to complete his memoirs to earn money for his family. He finished on July 16, 1885, just one week before his death.
